Des Moines, Iowa -- Three years ago Senior Airman Shane Marin, a targeteer with the 132d Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group (ISRG), made the decision that he wanted more than a paycheck, he wanted community, and to make an impact. He decided the military was where he could find that. Britny Marin, his high school sweetheart and wife, knew this decision would impact their family, but she was excited.
“He’s the one that would have to wear the uniform, but we were all making that commitment and promise,” said Britny. “We want to use it as an opportunity to teach our kids and instill that sense of patriotism and pride.”
Soon after Marin swore in, Britny made the decision to join the Wingman Support Team (WST), a program run by Airman and Family Readiness. It was an easy decision because it gave her a way to be involved and gave her a support group of people who knew exactly what it was like to balance life, family and military.
“From there it took off, I like being involved in planning the events and seeing how well they went and how the families enjoy their time,” said Britny.
Britny is now secretary of the WST at the 132d Wing, she assists in planning, executing and cleanup of events and fundraisers. Including the Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Family Fun Days, among many others.
When she isn’t volunteering with the WST, Britny works in human resources for an energy contracting company. At work she uses her military background to hire veterans and military personnel.
Britny was nominated and won the Air National Guard level of the 2018 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year Award. This prestigious award recognizes non-military spouses from over 90 Air National Guard bases and their contributions to the service. Nominations are based on accomplishments in specific areas such as: base and community activities, Air Force- related organizations and demonstration of leadership.
“It was really humbling, I was not expecting it,” said Britny. “That’s not why I do it.”
Shortly after the announcement she had been chosen for the award, the Director of the Air National Guard Lt. Gen. L. Scott Rice visited the 132d Wing. During his visit Britny and Rice were able to talk and he coined her for all the hard work and dedication. Britny said that she could see how proud he was of the base and that he understands that it takes more than one person.
Britny said she loves the sense of community and familiarity that comes with this role. It makes what she does so important knowing who it’s impacting.
“I wish I had more time to give,” said Britny. “I want to make a difference, even if it’s only for one person.”
